Cyphers appeared in the 1974 movie Truck Turner, and worked with John Carpenter for the first time in the 1976 action film Assault on Precinct 13. He appeared in the popular horror film Halloween in 1978, and then appeared two years later in The Fog as Dan O'Bannon. He then played the Secretary of State in Carpenter's popular 1981 film Escape from New York.
In the 1970s, Cyphers had a recurring role in The Betty White Show, and made guest appearances on television series like Barnaby Jones and The Dukes of Hazzard, as well as in the 1977 mini series Roots.
He has also appeared in Sliders, ER, Seinfeld, JAG, and Any Day Now. From 1996 to 1998, Cyphers played Al Yaroker in the 1990s series Nick Freno: Licensed Teacher. He has also acted in various made-for-television movies.

Is a graduate of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
Took drama classes at Los Angeles City College and is a graduate of Cal. State at LA.
Is a recipient of the Los Angeles Drama Critics Award for best performance by an actor for his role in The Caretaker.
