Jasmine Guy
(Actress) as Whitley - A Different World
Updated:
2/01/2008
Name:
Jasmine Guy
Born:
March 10, 1964 in Boston, Massachusetts
Claim To Fame:
Who doesn't think of Jasmine as Whitley on the series "A Different World"? While she is a woman of many talents, this will always be the role that she is most identified with.
Family Life:
Married Terrence Duckette (August 22, 1998). On March 28, 1999, Jasmine gave birth to a baby girl, Imani.
Her father is the Reverend William Guy, pastor of the historic Friendship Baptist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. Her mother is Jaye Rudolph.
Info:
Jasmine Guy has a variety of talents. In 1990, Jasmine released a self-titled album (which I own and it's great) with backing vocals on a few songs from her "A Different World" co-star, Cree Summer.
Trivia:
Named daughter Imani after the name was used on "A Different World" as the daughter of the Taylors (played by Dawnn Lewis and Glynn Turman).
Although born in Boston, Massachusetts, Guy was raised in Atlanta, Georgia.
Her sister, Monica Guy, was often her stand-in on the set of "A Different World".
Teaches dance to underprivileged children.
Was good friends with Tupac Shakur and remains close friends with his mother, Afeni Shakur.
Became a member of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 1981, at the age of seventeen.
Was a backup dancer in the first season of 'Fame.' You can see her in some episodes.
Where Are They Now:
To this day she continues a career in film, theater, and music. In fact back in the late 90's I saw her in the touring production of Chicago and she is once again touring with the show.
In 2004 she wrote a book 'Afeni Shakur: Evolution of a Revolutionary for the African American Studies' Afeni is the mother of Tupac Shakur.
She also had a co-starring role in the Showtime series, 'Dead Like Me.'
In the spring of 2006, Jasmine spoke to the graduating class at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and revealed that she will record a second album. She commented that of all the entertainment industries, the music one was the worst. She will sell her new album online herself and not through a major label.
One of Jasmine's passions is the program she her sister created. It's called Miss Monica's School (named after her sister). The little program has turned into a full-fledge dance school!
The school teaches over one hundred kids ballet, tap, jazz and Hip-Hop.
Jasmine says: "I spend a lot of time raising funds, and awareness for the center and I try to choreograph an original piece for the dance company at least once a year. I’m so proud of the dedication my sister has to these children."
Most recently Jasmine can be seen as the co-host of 'America's Ballroom Challenge' airing on PBS in January and February of 2008.
Jasmine is also touring the country in her one-woman tour de force, 'Raisin' Cane' capturing the power, beauty and brilliance of the Harlem Renaissance.
