He made his debut at the age of nine in a production of "Watch on the Rhine" with the Carolina Playmakers in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He trained as an actor at the American Shakespeare Festival in Stratford, Connecticut. In 1970, he made his first Broadway appearance. Sommer made his film debut in Don Siegel's classic Dirty Harry (1971). Since then, he has appeared in such films as The Stepford Wives (1975), Close Encounters Of The Third Kind (1977), Still of the Night (1982), Silkwood (1983), Peter Weir's thriller Witness (1985) opposite Harrison Ford, Target (1985), Malice (1993), Patch Adams (1998), and X-Men: The Last Stand (2006).
Trivia:
Studied at the Carnegie Institute of Technology. Appears with Michael Murphy in The Front (1976) and 30 years later in X-Men: The Last Stand (2006). The hugely popular NHL team, Anaheim Ducks, got their name from his character, Mr. Gerald Ducksworth, in the movie the Mighty Ducks.
Where Are They Now:
He appeared in the 2008 war drama Stop- Loss as Senator Orton Worrell. In 2010, he had an uncredited role in the comedy The Other Guys as D.A. Radford.
