Ducommun ran away from home when he was 14, hitchhiked around the northern U.S., and went back to Canada when he was 17, this time to Vancouver. He got involved with stand-up comedy at a Vancouver club, at first on a dare, but he found he loved it and was asked back to perform again. This gave his career a jumpstart and soon he was playing clubs in Canada.
He was given his own children's show to host, called "ZigZag," and was asked by Alan Thicke to be on his talk show "Thicke of the Night." Ducommun was an announcer and performed on the late-night talk show, but unfortunately it did not meet with success.
Ducommun went on to perform at clubs in L.A. and acting in sitcoms. He also picked up a few film roles, starting with "No Small Affair" (1984), and won the role of Art Weingartner, the nosy neighbor to Tom Hanks in The 'Burbs (1989).
HBO did a special with Ducommun in 1989 called Rick Ducommun: Piece of Mind (1989) (TV), which was well received, as was the follow-up, "Hit and Run" in 1992. Ducommun was also a regular performed on the Comedy Channel, later renamed, Comedy Central. He also hosted several pay and cable programs that featured stand-up comedy.
Ducommun is also recognizable in minor roles for several blockbuster films, such as Spaceballs, Die Hard, The Hunt for Red October, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, The Experts, The Last Boy Scout, Encino Man, Blank Check, Last Action Hero and Scary Movie.
Trivia:
Rick and his brother Peter started the legendary Canadian skateboard company, Skull Skates, in the late 1970s.
Grew up on a farm.
Where Are They Now:
Ducommun's last acting role was in the 2004 comedy Funky Monkey. Currently, he resides in Ontario, Canada, with his wife Lauren and three kids.
