Review:
The doctor is in...the big house! After his part in the Miskatonic University Massacre, Dr. Herbert West (Jeffrey Combs) has been serving a long stretch in prison. This has in no way kept him from his eerie experiments. Now with a new assistant, who has a past connection to West, these macabre medical men have found a new way to bring the dead back and Death Row will never be the same. It's beyond insanity! It's beyond obsession! It's
Beyond Re-Animator
!
Here we have the third part of the
Re-Animator
trilogy. This one, like
Bride of Re-Animator
has Brian Yuzna at the helm, and he continues to offer audiences a heaping helping of horror and humor that's synonymous with this series, but it doesn't quite live up to expectations.
Jeffrey Combs is back as Dr. Herbert West and he's more delightfully diabolical than ever! It's the role he was born to play and he does it so well. The only problem is that once to "plot" kicks in it seems as if West kind of becomes more of a secondary character. I guess that's what he's done in all of the previous films, but it just seems more apparent this time around. Jason Barry as Dr. Howard Phillips is fine in the role as West's protégé , but it's Elsa Pataky that has a wide range of stuff to do as a reporter who gets beyond caught up in West's weirdness.
The prison setting gives this entry a great look and mood, but it's a bit of a let down as
Beyond Re-Animator
lacks the over-the-top energy of the previous two films. Things do get rather chaotic, but unfortunately not much of it is too memorable. There's more than enough gore and nudity to keep the fans happy, but this really wouldn't have much appeal to the uninitiated.
Beyond Re-Animator
is fun for fans of the series and the brilliant Jeffrey Combs, but it pales in comparison with its predecessors:
Re-Animator
and
Bride of Re-Animator
Stars (out of 4):
Fun Fact:
The young doctor played by Jason Barry is called Howard Phillips which are the first two names of H. P. Lovecraft, the writer of the story the first movie was based on.
