Review: After moving to Salem, Mass., teenager Max Dennison (Omri Katz) explores an abandoned house with his sister Dani (Thora Birch) and their new friend, Allison (Vinessa Shaw). After dismissing a story Allison tells as superstitious, Max accidentally frees a coven of evil witches known as the Sanderson sisters (Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy) who used to live in the house. Now, with the help of a magical cat, the kids must steal the witches' book of spells to stop them from becoming immortal. Despite what critics may lead you to believe, Hocus Pocus is an iconic Halloween classic. This film benefits from a strong cast, and scenery that screams autumn. Many scenes were filmed in the towns of Salem and Marblehead, Massachusetts, providing context and authenticity to the story. Each Sanderson sister role is played wonderfully and uniquely by our three main stars. What's most impressive about this movie is its ability to feature amusing, silly Halloween scenes for children, while also supplying an engaging plot and more mature comedy for adults. This is quite literally the ideal formula for a perfect family classic. There is no shortage of cheesiness here, but there's also a fun, entertaining, and quotable movie to be enjoyed. So instead of waiting 300 years for a virgin to light the black flame candle, surround yourself in a circle of salt, and let Hocus Pocus take thee away to a land of enchantment this Halloween season!
