Review: So many war movies claim to be "anti-war", but Platoon is the real deal. Using his firsthand experiences, writer-director Oliver Stone creates a docu-drama that puts you in the jungle and exposes you to the true horrors of the Vietnam War.

The performances of the ensemble cast are all awards worthy. Tom Berenger, Willem Dafoe, Keith David, Charlie Sheen, and John C. McGinley are the true standouts here. It doesn't take long for the audience to get lost in this dark, brutal tale of the lose of innocence at the hands of war, violence, and the cruelty of man. It won 4 Oscars (Best Picture, Directing, Film Editing, Sound) and as you watch, it's easy to see why.

I can't recommend Platoon enough. It's a brilliant war film that continues to shock and surprise me with every viewing.

Fun Fact: According to Oliver Stone, he intentionally cast Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe against type (Berenger, who played the ruthless, sadistic Sergeant Barnes, was mostly famous at that point for playing good guys, while Dafoe, who had primarily played villains up until then, played the heroic, compassionate Sergeant Elias). The casting worked, and both men received Oscar nominations for their work.
